The first chapter of the Buccaneers' battle to replace Tom Brady is in the books. It doesn't sound like Todd Bowles is any closer to officially naming a succe sor.Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask each got an opportunity to stake their claim to the starting job against Jimmy Graham Jersey the Steelers in preseason Week 1.In Bowles' opinion, both performed well in the 27-17 defeat.MORE:Here's a closer look at how Mayfield and Trask performed against Pittsburgh.First, Bowles offered his thoughts on Mayfield, who started the game. The coach seemed pleased with the poise with which Mayfield managed the team."He was composed. He did a good job running the offense," Bowles said. "He made the plays he was supposed to make. "Especially on the short-yardage stuff."That may be true, but it's clear that Mayfield is nit-picking his performance a bit. He also was pleased with the performance of Trask, who relieved Mayfield but saw equal playing time with the same offensive line and pa s-catching weapons."I thought Kyle made some good throws as well and he commanded the offense just the same," Bowles said.Trask's stat line was similar to Mayfield's, but it came with a few critical differences. He completed 6 of 10 pa ses for 99 yards but threw an interception and was sacked three times. Those negative plays prevented the Buccaneers from mounting a touchdown drive while he was in the game.Bowles didn't want to condemn Trask for the mistake. Both quarterbacks were accurate, but Mayfield was a bit more efficient and avoided the negative plays that plagued Trask.That said, Trask will get a chance to change that. He is set to start the team's next game against the Jets.And as Bowles explained, he is planning to continue to surround each with the same supporting cast to make sure he can best evaluate them head-to-head."They both had the same type of play.
